One-Day Conference

“Peri-Implantitis: A relay race of prevention and therapy – Linking Science with Practice”
February 11th, 2023 “Electra Palace Hotel”, Thessaloniki

In a relay race, runners must pass the baton from one to the next within a predefined zone. If they fail to make the handoff within that zone they are disqualified. At the same time the runner receiving the baton cannot start their leg of the race from a complete stop. The amount of time lost and a poor handoff could have detrimental effects on the outcome. The number of patients receiving or carrying dental implants worldwide has increased. As current data suggests, peri- implantitis is more common than originally thought and its therapy resembles a relay race including a set number of stages passing the baton from prevention to therapy and backwards. The last runner in the race of peri-implantitis therapy, is often the periodontist who is usually considered to take the project over the winning-line. As the last runner, we often deal with the worst case scenarios and we have somehow to turn around and fetch the baton on many issues to neutralize the discrepancies between the previous handoffs. In this conference we will discuss the different dynamic zones/aspects of peri-implantitis therapy to achieve a better treatment outcome.

SPEAKERS

Caspar Wohlfahrt

Dr Wohlfahrt treated his first case with peri-implantitis close to 20 years ago and has treated numerous cases and conducted clinical studies both on surgical treatment of peri-implantitis as well as maintenance of dental implants. He shares his time between lecturing at the department of Periodontology postgraduate program, University of Oslo and Private Specialist Clinic. The lecture will be based on clinical experiences and long term results from the lecturers own clinical practice and research. The importance of case selection, pre-treatment patient information, patient awareness and expectations, methodological treatment planning and treatment implementation will be discussed. Maintenance protocols including the lecturers own invention Labrida BioClean brush will also be introduced.

Maria Balta

Dr. Balta obtained her MSc in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry from the Academic Centre of Dentistry in Amsterdam (ACTA) 5 years ago. During her PhD she got involved in the field of host modulation, focusing on the anti-inflammatory and wound healing effects of novel drug candidates and received a certificate on Immunology from Harvard Medical School. She has been lecturing and working as a clinician at the Department of Periodontology, University of Oslo since 2018. The lecture will include research data and clinical cases from patients treated in private specialist practices in Greece, Netherlands and Norway.
